US FDA reports a shortage of medications used to treat breathing problems

(Reuters) – Akorn, the sole manufacturer of albuterol in America, has stopped producing it. The U.S. regulator for health said Wednesday that they are working to solve the shortage.

Food and Drug Administration added that it was working with manufacturers in the supply chains to “understand and mitigate and prevent or reduce any associated impacts” due to shortages of medication.

FDA tweeted that all other strengths are available and that vial sizes can be used to meet demand from hospitals and elsewhere.

According to regulators, the shortage affects only a specific dosage form of the medication used in hospitals. It does not affect albuterol Inhalers for personal usage.
