While the garden — which people can visit during tours of Graceland — serves as Elvis’ final resting place, it isn’t where he was first buried.
Presley was buried in Memphis’ Forest Hill Cemetery, Aug. 18, 1977 two days after his death.
The coffin, which weighed in at 900 lbs, was stolen by the men who tried to take it and keep the rest for ransom. Although the scheme was so weak that they could only be charged for trespassing at the cemetery, three men were arrested. Presley and Gladys were moved to Graceland because they were afraid of being copied by other criminals.
Other family members of Elvis were buried on the estate since then.

Elvis died in Memphis on August 16, 1977. His mother, Gladys, was also buried in Memphis’ Forest Hill Cemetery two days later. After an attempted to steal his coffin he was moved to Graceland.
After Elvis’ death, his estate experienced “a cash flow problemGraceland’s website stated that Graceland had a cost of “over half million dollars a calendar year in maintenance, taxes and repairs.” Priscilla, Elvis’ ex-wife, and the executors decided that Graceland should be open to the public. Jack Soden was hired to plan and implement the project in late 1981. Graceland opened for tours one year later.

Gladys Presley was Elvis’ mother. She died in Memphis, Tennessee, on August 14, 1958. She was originally buried at Forest Hill Cemetery, Memphis. But after the incident involving Elvis’ coffin her remains were moved over to Graceland. In the Meditation Garden, she is buried beside her husband Vernon Presley. The garden also contains a memorial to Elvis’ twin brother Jessie.
2018 Gladys’ headstoneThe inscription, which was placed at her tomb in December 1964, was added in the Meditation Garden to commemorate the 60th anniversary of her death. Gladys’ Jewish heritage is represented by the Star of David on her headstone.
Vernon Presley

Vernon Presley was Elvis’ father. He died in Memphis on June 26, 1979. He is buried among Gladys, Elvis and the center of the garden.
Vernon was appointed executor and trustee by Elvis’ will following his death in 1977. His grandmother, Minnie Mae Presley, his father Vernon, and his only child Lisa Marie Presley were the beneficiaries. Graceland’s website states that the will stated that Vernon Presley could at his discretion provide financial support to other family members if necessary.
Following Vernon’s death, his will brought about the appointment of three co-executors/co-trustees to succeed him, including the National Bank of Commerce in Memphis, Elvis and Vernon’s longtime accountant Joseph Hanks and Priscilla Presley.
Minnie Mae Presley

Minnie Mae Presley was Elvis’ paternal grandmother. She died in Memphis, Tennessee, on May 8, 1980. She was buried in the Meditation Garden at Graceland with her headstone to the left of Elvis.
