Why a rising act is limiting gig prices
Caity Baser was not able to afford gigs as a child.
She regrets not being able to attend an Ed Sheeran concert with her friends. She couldn’t afford it.
Caity is now a touring artist nine years later and doesn’t want it to happen again.
So she’s decided to cap the price of her gig tickets so the most fans will pay is £15.00.
Newsbeat is told by the 20-year old that times are hard for everyone at the moment.
“I don’t want gigs to become a problem for anyone. I want people to have fun, not worry about anything.
Caity describes her music as “cheeky British pop” if you aren’t familiar.
She has a large following on TikTok and her song Friendly Sex has been played more than six millions times on Spotify.
The concerts are lively and her fans sing along to every word of her lyrics. Caity believes that “community” is vital.
“It’s about having everyone present and having a room full.
“A lot my audience are my age. They’re students. I don’t want it to be more difficult for the people who got me to where they are.”
Musicians are not immune to the cost-of-living crisis.
You will be faced with higher hotel and travel costs. tours are costing them much more.
Caity, a Southampton resident, believes she can compensate for ticket buyers who pay less by purchasing merchandise such as hoodies or t-shirts.
Although it’s rare for smaller artists, some big names have done so.
Tom Grennan, who was praised by fans when he stated that the “pinch is real” and that he takes it very seriously in October, was highly lauded.
He stated that his team worked hard to bring down the price of tickets for his UK tour and had eliminated all platinum and VIP ticket options during a time of high living costs.
Caity’s tour starts in April with 10 dates all across the country. As an artist, she claims that she can control the show’s pricing and ticket availability.
“At the end, it’s your show.
“I explained what I wanted to do to my team, and they said that I don’t want people missing out on gigs the way I did growing up.”
Caity is on tour for three months, so it’s quite busy. But it’s not her budget that keeps her awake at night.
It’s the clothes.
“I have a lot of crazy ideas. I can’t sleep. Every night, I’m up and think about my makeup and hair and how to tie it all together.
