INDUSTRY DIRECTORS SAY YOUTUBE DOES NOT DO ENOUGH TO STOP PLATFORM MISUSE

DES PLAINES, Ill., Jan. 19, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Thefts of Kia and Hyundai automobiles increased dramatically across The United States In 2022, insurance industry associations stated that misuse of social media platforms like YouTube by criminal organizations and individuals is contributing to an increase in illegal activity. The International Association of Special Investigation Units, Coalition Against Insurance Fraud and National Insurance Crime Bureau sent a joint letter addressed to YouTube’s Chief Executive Officer. Susan Wojcicki Request that the social media platform delete “how-to” videos that give detailed instructions on how to steal Kia or Hyundai automobiles.

YouTube is not doing enough to stop the misuse of its platform.

“Everyday consumers are being victims by criminals using social networking platforms to learn the newest illegal tricks, and techniques,” said David GlawePresident and CEO, National Insurance Crime Bureau. “Some platforms don’t do enough to protect innocent victims against unnecessary harm.”

Many police departments in the U.S. reported dramatic increases in thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles since these tutorial-type videos began appearing on YouTube, TikTok and other social media platforms.

  • Los AngelesAccording to a report by, there was an 85% increase in thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles in 2022 as compared to 2021. Los Angeles Police officers.

  • St. Louis: According to the, 48% of the 3970 motor vehicles reported as stolen between August and 2022 were Kia and Hyundai models. This compares with only 7% of all the vehicles that were stolen in 2021. St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

  • Milwaukee (Where the original video was shot): Two-thirds of the 5,144 cars stolen between July and 2021 were Hyundai models.

“Insurance Fraud is the crime that we all pay for. These videos harm American consumers by driving up premiums and increasing auto thefts. Industry leaders acknowledged in a letter to YouTube that TikTok and other social media platforms need to do more to stop these videos being shared.  YouTube has not yet removed many of these videos.
