Matt Shultz, the Cage the Elephant singer, was arrested in New York for gun possession

Matt ShultzSinger of the Grammy-winning rock group, Cage the ElephantPolice found two loaded firearms inside his Bowery Hotel room and arrested him Thursday night.

Shultz was convicted of criminal possession with a weapon. He didn’t possess a license for either of the firearms.

According to Bowery employees, the singer was seen carrying a gun into the Lower Manhattan public toilets on Wednesday night. Police responded to a 911 call and knocked on Shultz’s door Thursday morning to recover the weapons, a Sig Sauer and a Smith & Wesson.

Shultz spent the night in Lower Manhattan at the 9th precinct.

Cage the Elephant is a two-time Grammy winner for best rock album, taking home trophies for both 2015’s “Tell Me I’m Pretty” and 2019’s “Social Cues.” The band’s 2013 album “Melophobia,” featuring hit songs “Come a Little Closer” and “Cigarette Daydreams,” was nominated for best alternative music album.

The group most recently performed at Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival in San Diego, Calif., on Nov. 20, 2022.

Bursting onto the scene in 2006, Cage the Elephant became a 2010s alternative rock mainstay with a slew of hits including “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked,” “Shake Me Down” and “Trouble.” Formed in Bowling Green, Ky., the band moved in England in 2008 and found success overseas with its self-titled debut album, released in 2009.

Shultz was joined by his older brother Brad Shultz as well as Jared Champion and Daniel Tichenor. Lincoln Parish left the band in 2013.
