Carrera is a Latin America Amateur leader with great perks in sight

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico (AP) — Luis Carrera of Mexico played bogey-free Friday at Grand Reserve for a second straight 5-under 67, giving him a one-shot lead going into the weekend of the Latin America Amateur Championship.

Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira from Argentina was among the players who missed a playoff last year by one shot in the tournament. He also had a score of 67 and was one behind.

The winner is eligible to compete in the Masters in April or the U.S. Open June.

Carrera, a senior from Central Florida, stated that he was inspired in part by Alvaro Ortiz’s win in the Latin American Amateur 2019 and would love to help Mexico claim another title in this championship.

The final cut was 147

Aaron Jarvis from the Cayman islands, the reigning champion, was seven shots ahead with a 70. After two rounds, there were only eight players within five shots.

Julian Perico, Peru had the lowest round at 66. He was two shots behind Carrera.

Mateo Fuenmayor, Colombia, was the 18-hole leader at 6-under 64. He followed that with an 77 and was nine behind.
