Dolphins fire Boyer after 3 Years as defensive coordinator

The Miami Dolphins have fired Josh Boyer after three seasons as the team’s defensive coordinator, the team announced Thursday.

“I am grateful for Josh’s contributions this year and throughout his tenure with the Dolphins,” Miami coach Mike McDaniel said in a statement released by the Dolphins. “The defense made strides through the season, so coming to this decision was not easy, but ultimately I feel it is in the best long-term interests of the Miami Dolphins and the continued growth of our players and team.”

McDaniel, who was hired by the Dolphins last February, retained Boyer from former Dolphins coach Brian Flores’ coaching staff to keep continuity after a strong end to the 2021 season on defense.

Boyer’s group had to deal with a lot injuries on that side, especially in the second.

Miami moved from 16th through 24th in scoring defense from 2021-2022. It also moved from tied for 14th for sacks to third for takeaways, and 10th to 30th for sacks.

The Dolphins were 18th in total defense, 27th passing defense, and 24th on third downs.

Miami also fired Steve Gregory, safety coach and outside linebackers coach Ty McKenzie, and Steve Ferentz, assistant linebackers coach.

These moves follow the announcements by Chris Grier and McDaniel, general managers of the team. They had previously stated Monday that it would take some time to get their staff in order after a disappointing collapse between 8-3 and 9-9 in 2022. This included a loss to Buffalo during the first round playoffs.
