“I read a quote in this morning’s paper attributed to compose Gustav Mahler that stopped me for a moment: Death has, on placid cat’s paws, entered the room.
I should have known that something was up.
David and I fought a lot, but it was mostly just glancing blows that left us with numb skulls.
I was content to be at peace and with him.
He was undoubtedly a giant musician and his harmonic sensibilities were simply genius.
As our voices soared towards the sun like Icarus’s, it was the glue that held us all together.
I am deeply sorry for his loss and will be forever indebted to him.
Graham Nash’s voice blended perfectly with the voices of Stephen Stills and David Crosby in one of the greatest folk-rock groups of their era. He also remembered his bandmate Crosby today. Melissa Etheridge was also a father to Crosby’s two children.
“I am grieving the loss of my friend and Bailey’s biological father, David,” Etheridge writes on her Facebook page. “He gave me the gift of family. Django and Jan are two of my greatest heroes. His music, legacy, and love will be cherished for generations. A true treasure.”
Crosby was the donor of sperm for Etheridge and Julie Cypher, who were then partners in building a family. Beckett, their son, died at 21 in 2020, after a long battle against addiction.
“It is with a deep and profound sadness that I learned that my friend David Crosby has passed,” Nash said on Facebook. ” I know people tend to focus on how volatile our relationship has been at times, but what has always mattered to David and me more than anything was the pure joy of the music we created together, the sound we discovered with one another, and the deep friendship we shared over all these many long years. David was fearless, both in life and in music. His talent and personality will be missed. His beautiful music is a testament to his thoughts, passion, and heart. These are the important things. My heart is truly with his wife, Jan, his son, Django, and all of the people he has touched in this world.”
Stephen Stills and Stephen Crosby met for the first time in 1966, when Crosby was in The Hollies’ U.S. tour. They reunited at a now almost mythic party at Cass Elliott’s Laurel Canyon house. The Hollies were soon abandoned by Nash, who went on to Crosby and Stills 1968. (A year later, Neil Young began and off and on collaboration with the trio as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
Crosby was unable to reconcile with his bandmates in recent years.
