There’s no denying it — vegan food It has gained popularity in recent years.

However, despite the rise of veganism in grocery stores and the mainstream media, vegan diets have a reputation for being expensive — which isn’t attainable for every household.

Toronto-based dietitian, and food blogger Abbey Sharp Believes that everything is possible.

“[Vegan diets] Sharp stated that food isn’t necessarily more expensive and can save money if you make smart choices about your food choices.” Yahoo Canada. “Animal protein (meat or chicken) is the largest expense at the grocery store.”

Sharp’s top tips for staying vegan in the face of inflation? Read on.

Beware of ‘faux.

While “faux” meat options that replace traditional meats are a way for vegans to transition to a plant-based lifestyle, they aren’t always the cheapest — or the healthiest.

Sharp says it is more cost-effective to replace meat substitutes by high protein, vegan whole foods like beans, legumes, grains, and tofu.

Sharp said, “It is great that we offer faux meat options that allow vegans to have the same experience as people who eat meat.” However, simple plant-based proteins like beans and legumes are better than none.

“You’re going end up saving more money.”

According to the food expert, nutrition is important because fake meat products can be very processed. It’s better for your wallet and your health to eat simple, whole foods.

However, there are times when meat substitutes can be “fun ways of enjoying classic meat-based comfort food.”

Buy bulk

A bulk store will generally be cheaper than a supermarket, as you don’t have to pay for extra packaging or brand name.

Sharp explains how bulk buying items such as nuts, seeds, oats, and grains can help reduce their cost. You also have the option to buy what you need.

“Take advantage of pulses! The best sources of protein are beans, chickpeas, and lentils. You can save money by buying dried beans and soaking them and cooking them yourself.” she explained.

The freezer is your best friend

Frozen food, including vegetables and fruit, can be much cheaper than their fresh counterparts — and sometimes can even be healthier.

To save money, choose cheaper frozen produce when in doubt. Sharp explained that frozen produce is often more nutritious than fresh because it is flashfrozen at peak ripeness.

There are many options for frozen food. You can find frozen food in the freezer aisle. There are options for things like cauliflower rice, chopped butternut, smoothie cubes, and spiralled zucchini.

Large bags of frozen vegetables and fruits can save money, especially during off-seasons when they aren’t readily available.

Take care when you shop

Sharp: “Before you shop, make a list. Stick to that list when you’re at the store. This will help you avoid impulse buying.” explained. “Buy only what is necessary, but be open to making substitutions if it’s more costly than you expected. If you want peaches, but strawberries are available, swap.

The dietitian also recommends that you plan your meals before shopping and choose recipes that use the same ingredients.

“If you have teriyaki for one recipe, look for another recipe that uses it.” She added that… Next, you can use that recipe list as a basis for your grocery list. And then, try to keep it to a minimum.”

Sharp recommends that you plan your route in advance at the grocery or bulk food stores, similar to meal planning and creating a list. You won’t find anything you don’t want or can’t resist.

Avoid junk food aisles if you are a fan of chips. You can save money on impulse purchases that don’t end up in your cupboard by buying items you actually need.
