Champions Cup: Tigers stunned by last-gasp Ospreys

Ospreys converted a last-minute goal to defeat Leicester 27 to 26 and book a place for Friday in the Champions Cup.

Reduced to 14 men after a yellow card for replacement prop Dan Richardson, two-time European champions Leicester were unable to hold back the Welsh side’s surge with backrower Jac Morgan scoring from close range.

Owen Williams was able to keep his cool and convert the winning goal.

Leicester had already qualified to the knockout rounds, before their 100% winning record was ended.

Jack van Poortvliet, Harry Simmons scored Leicester’s try. Springboks star Handre pollard converted both of them and added four penalties.

Morgan, Keelan Gilles and Dewi Lake all played for Morgan’s Ospreys. Morgan also finished the pool stage of this tournament with three wins from the four games.

Williams kicked 2 penalties and 2 conversions, with Cai Evans adding 1 conversion.

Lyon, a French team that suffered three losses to begin the competition, kept their slim hope alive by beating South Africa’s Bulls 31-7.

With two tries from hooker Guillaume Marchand and Jean-Marc Doussain, scrum-half, Lyon took a 24-0 lead at the interval.

Kurt-Lee Arendse lowered the Bulls’ arrears by scoring their last try before Lyon’s fourth score was scored just before the hour mark. This secured a bonus point.

Bulls are yet to secure their place in the final 16, while Lyon look set to fall into the knockout rounds for the Challenge Cup, which they won last year.

Berdeu stated, “Few people saw our qualifying with a win against the Bulls.”

It doesn’t matter whether we return to Challenge Cup. We will defend the title that we won last year if we get down to that level.”
