Lincoln exhibition: “A homecoming of sorts”

A free Lincoln exhibition will feature works by contemporary artist David Remfry.

‘David Remfry – A Moment Captured’ will showcase watercolours by the West Sussex-born artist at Usher Gallery, Danes Terrace.

Remfry is now in his 80s and studied at Hull College of Art, 1959-1964. He then went on painting portraits of famous faces, including actor Alan Cumming, and Stella McCartney, fashion designer.

It runs from 28 February to 1 May.

He is well-known for his large watercolours of people dancing and his New York landscape paintings.

The gallery stated that Remfry “met, mixed with many fascinating people and famous stars” over his 20 years of living in New York’s Chelsea Hotel.

The new show was described as a “celebration in scale, colour, and movement”.

In 2001, the artist was awarded an MBE and five years later was elected a member of The Royal Academy of Arts.

Jenny Gleadell from the Usher Gallery described the exhibition as a “homecoming” of sorts.

She said that Remfry spent most of his career living in New York and London, but he did his first sketch of Hull’s Locarno nightclub dancers while attending art school.

“He was then invited for an Honorary Doctorate of Arts at our University of Lincoln.”

She said, “Where better than to show this celebrated artist’s works? Close by where his creative journey began?”
