Outline of Jerod Mayo’s future with Patriots taking shape

Jerod Mayo, New England Patriots’ inside linebackers coach, appears to be staying in New England for at least the near future. But, there hasn’t been much news on the Mayo front. last week’s announcement.

This begs the question: How will his future look in New England?

He could be promoted to defensive coordinator. He could also be the head coach in wait, after Bill Belichick is gone. Mayo cancelled his interview as a head coach with the Carolina Panthers last Wednesday, which may give some insight into his future with Patriots.

Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard talked about the possibilities for Mayo’s future, during a recent appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Felger & Mazz. Although there is potential for him as the successor, the likely path is not as simple.

“It’s my understanding that Mayo is, will be, the sort of successor-in-waiting for Belichick, just like (Josh) McDaniels was,” said Bedard, as transcribed by Dakota Randall of NESN.com. “Now, that doesn’t mean he’s the successor. But he’s the guy that, in case of emergency, he’s the guy. That’s where the Krafts would turn to. … Say Bill quits, or Bill gets fired, or Bill has a health issue — that Mayo would be the interim coach, just like McDaniels would’ve been.”

Belichick turns 71 when the 2023 NFL Season begins in September. With the legendary coach entering the 24th season of his tenure with the Patriots, the end may be closer.
