Rams expected to pick up Matthew Stafford’s option bonus worth $62M guaranteed

Matthew Stafford already stated that multiple times. he’s not retiring, making it clear that he’s playing in 2023 after suffering a spinal cord contusion this season. With Sean McVay returning as head coach, Stafford will be in Los Angeles for at most one more year.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Rams are expected to pick up Stafford’s option bonus by the third day of the league year, which will guarantee Stafford $62 million and thus keep him on the roster.

If the Rams decide not to take up the option, they might be able to move on from Stafford by making him a post-June 1-cut, freeing up some cap space. But there’s no question Stafford is their best option at quarterback when healthy.

Stafford has a $1.5 million base salary in 2023 with a cap of $20 million. His salary rises to $31million in 2024 (fully guaranteed), and his cap hit increases to $49.5million next.

Stafford played only nine games in the past season. Stafford was twice placed in the concussion protocol and was eventually ruled out of the season due to a neck injury suffered in Week 11. He had only 10 touchdown passes and 8 interceptions for the year.
