Gainesville man running through the neighborhood, screaming and wielding a knife is indicted for attempted murder

Jan. 16—The defense attorneys for a Gainesville man accused of attempted murder after investigators said he ran through a neighborhood with knives said he was experiencing a mental health episode and was not trying to hurt anyone.

Darrion Suave Frley, 34, was arrested Jan. 10 on charges including attempted murder and two counts of aggravated attack.

Brad Raper, Gainesville Police Investigator, said that Fraley was running through the area with knives.

Raper stated that Raper screamed, “I’ll kill all of them,” or something similar in recordings of the 911 call at a Magistrate Court hearing held in November.

Jake Shapiro, a defense attorney, and Rob McNeill (an assistant defense attorney) said that Fraley was not trying to hurt anyone. They claimed that Fraley was suffering from a mental disorder and felt he had to protect his mother. However, it was not clear what threat he was posing to her.

Fraley’s mom was driving alongside Fraley in a vehicle, notifying neighbors to return home and calling 911. Fraley’s mother asked police for help in a 1013 Order, which is an involuntary mental evaluation for anyone deemed to be a danger to themselves or others.

Raper stated at the November hearing that Fraley approached two private paramedics who were picking up a man with knives.

Raper explained that Phillip Garrison stood outside the home holding a revolver and protecting them while the paramedics made their way back into the home.

Garrison started firing after Fraley and Garrison fought. Raper reported that Fraley took the gun from Garrison and pulled the trigger several times until all bullets were gone.

Raper reported that Garrison pushed Fraley to the floor and kept him there until police arrived.

According to the indictment, Fraley is charged with aggravated assault for pointing the gun at Garrison and approaching Garrison with the knife drawn.

Fraley was also accused of possessing a gun and a knife in the commission of a felony.

Fraley’s attorneys for defense said that they hoped to reach a settlement that would bring about accountability and local mental treatment.
