Mick Taylor: The Lyrical Guitar

Mick Taylor, born in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, on January 17, 1949, became one of Britain’s finest guitarists. He showed his soft spoken virtuosity during those performances with the group that made Taylor world-famous. Taylor did not take on this high-pressure position as a young musician.

Many people consider Taylor the best technically-skilled musician to have ever played with the Stones. They regret that his tenure didn’t last more than five years. He was part of what was undoubtedly an era of greatness for the Stones, both as a live and recording force. Charlie Watts was extremely complimentary of Taylor’s contributions to the group in 2013. “Mick Taylor was a good choice, because he lifted the band tremendously,” he said. “He probably didn’t know it at the time, but he did. Keith and Mick gave him beautiful songs. It was a period of great writing, and the most musical of ours. Mick Taylor’s style, I think, was the reason. He was a very lyrical player.”
