U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team coach Gregg Berhalter has revealed he assaulted his now-wife during an argument in college and explained the incident was being used against him in a recent blackmail attempt.

The 49-year old posted a long statement to Twitter Tuesday claiming that he kicked Rosalind Berhalter in the legs after an argument while they were both 18, and still in college. He explained that the incident occurred in 1991, just four months after their first date.

“I met my soulmate at the beginning of 1991.” Rosalind, who was then a freshman at college, had just turned 18 when she met me,” Gregg wrote in the tweet. Rosalind and me had a heated argument outside after we went out to drink at a local bar. It got physical and I kicked her in both the legs.

He continued, “There are no excuses for my actions in that night; it’s a shameful moment that I regret to the day.” Rosalind asked me for an apology, but I was unable to accept it.

Gregg admitted that he regretted the incident, and sought counseling shortly afterwards “to learn from it and grow.”
