The Best Cities to Live in for Families on $6,000 per Month

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), an average household makes $84,352 per year and spends $702,258 annually. The BLS survey data said American households On average, they spend $5,111 to $5.854 per month on housing and transportation.

What about families earning $6,000 per month? They want to live comfortably, work, and manage their expenses. GOBankingRates used data provided by ApartmentList, Sperling’s Best, and the Economic Policy Institute’s Family Budget Calculator to find the best places for families to rent for less than $6,000 per month. This data combined allowed us to determine the average rent for a 2-bedroom apartment in 2022, the cost of children within selected metro areas, and identify cities with a lower overall cost of living index of less than 90.

These are the average monthly expenses, which range from the lowest to the highest. ranking of the 15 qualifying cities.
