Brian McBride is not returning to the USMNT as GM
According to a report, Brian McBride is not returning as the U.S. national team general manger. Friday report from ESPN.
McBride was the GM of the program. He worked with Gregg Berhalter, the head coach, on day-to-day management, but his actual role was ambiguous and only off-the field, behind-the scenes.
Berhalter’s future, meanwhile, remains uncertain — he is out of contract, and under investigation for an early-1990s domestic violence incident His now-wife should be involved.

McBride was appointed in 2020, after Stewart, the USMNT’s first-ever GM, was promoted to a new role as sporting director. Stewart informed McBride that McBride would oversee the hiring and firing USMNT coaches upon his hiring.
Stewart has been responsible for reviewing Berhalter’s program and overseeing the USMNT’s exit from the 2022 World Cup. Stewart is the person who will decide on the position of head coaching as the team looks forward to the 2026 World Cup.
U.S. Soccer president Cindy Parlow Cone said Thursday at a board meeting that the investigation into Berhalter “should be completed in the coming weeks” — at which Stewart will be able to proceed with the decision.
