Immobile blow but Lazio see off Sassuolo to keep in Euro chase

Lazio overcame the injury of captain Ciro Immobile and won 2-0 against Sassuolo to keep their Champions League hopes alive.

Mattia Zaccagni converted a penalty after Sassuolo defender Jeremy Toljan had handled the ball from a corner.

Felipe Anderson added another deep into injury time with Lazio. He is now in fifth place, three points behind third-placed Juventus, Inter Milan, who are equal on points, but four ahead of AC Milan champions.

Maurizio Saari’s side took advantage AC Milan’s 2-2 draw at Lecce. Juventus was beaten 5-1 by Napoli on Friday, who lead the standings with a healthy nine points.

AC Milan Milan host Lazio next weekend. Immobile will be out of commission after feeling discomfort in his right thigh for a quarter hour.

This is a major blow to the 32-year old striker who had already missed several games this season due to a left thigh issue.

The top scorer in Serie A with 189 goals is aiming to claim the title of top scorer for the fifth year to match the record set in 1950s by Swede Gunnar nordahl with AC Milan.

Immobile is currently on seven goals but Victor Osimhen, Napoli, has five more.

Sassuolo remain mired in the depths, sitting 16th  after this sixth defeat in seven matches.

Atalanta is sixth in the table, while AS Roma is fifth, but they are equal on points. They will both be playing against Fiorentina and Salernitana on Sunday.
