Ken Bruce fans shared their horror at the news that he is leaving BBC Radio 2 has been called “the final nail in the coffin” by some.

On Tuesday morning, the 71-year-old host announced that he would be retiring in March after 31 year of hosting the mid-morning show. Later, he confirmed that he would take up a new job with Greatest Hits Radio in April.

Famous fans and dedicated listeners called the departure “too big” and said that “nobody is left worth listening to now”.

Rylan Clark, Rylan’s station mate, posted a photo of them together on Twitter and wrote: “Ken Bruce. A beautiful man who’s always been so lovely to me at @BBCRadio2. Going to be so missed on air, but personally I’ll miss having a beer in a foreign country discussing anything and everything whilst at Eurovision. Thank you for being so kind.”

Richie Anderson, another Radio 2 star tweeted: “King Ken on the airwaves!” King Ken of Eurovision. The Popmaster himself. Most importantly, the Popmaster himself is the kindest and most loving radio personality.

Trevor Nelson said: “Wow Ken Bruce has announced his departure from radio 2. Huge respect.”

Lorraine Kelly said: “This is just too much. Ken Bruce is my favorite radio presenter anywhere on the planet. He’s kind, funny, wise and warm and I am really sad about this. End of an age. Your presence will be deeply missed, young man.”

Bruce is also Radio 2’s Eurovision correspondent. His mid-morning show, PopMaster, which he hosts for over 25 years, is also well-known.

One angry fan tweeted, “Ken Bruce leaving Radio 2!” “Nobody left worth listening now.”

Another listener wrote, “Do you hear that agonised shearing?” It’s Ken Bruce’s audience reaction to his announcement that he’s quitting R2 and causing it to sound like a scream. Argh.”

Many believed it was bad news for the station. One person tweeted, “That’s Radio 2 dead then.” Ken Bruce was the only decent one that they had left.

Someone else agreed. “Radio 2 is officially over!” Ken Bruce will turn off the lights when he goes.

Another fan added: “Final nail in the coffin for radio 2, ken Bruce has just announced he’s leaving the station at the end of march.”

One of his supporters tweeted the following: “Devastating News that” #KenBruce He is leaving #BBCRadio2 show!! He got me and so many other people out of lockdown. I can’t believe that I’ll ever listen to R2 again, right now.
