Mississippi wins the first SEC victory, beating South Carolina 70-58

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Matthew Murrell made five 3-pointers and scored 23 points, Jayveous McKinnis had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Mississippi beat South Carolina 70-58 on Tuesday night for the Rebels’ first SEC victory this season.

This was Ole Miss’ first SEC win (9-9-1-5), since it beat Georgia on February 19, before falling to its last four conference games.

Murrell scored 16 points in the second period, including three-pointers on back to back possessions that extended the Ole Miss lead at 55-42 with 4:26 left. He was two points short of his season-high.

After holding South Carolina to 30% shooting, Ole Miss led the break 30-20. The Gamecocks went seventy-plus minutes without making any field goals and ended the half with just two of their final fourteen shots.

Ole Miss led 45-31 at the end of the first half with a 10-0 run, which included five consecutive points from TJCaldwell.

Gregory Jackson II, star freshman, scored 15 points on 5-of-20 shots. Chico Carter Jr. added 12 for South Carolina (8-10-1). The Gamecocks shot 37% and were outrebounded by 43-31.
