Jan. 13—Local organization to host Dementia-Friendly Community Campaign

The Alzheimer’s and Dementia Foundation is launching its 2023 Dementia Friendly Community campaign by hosting a luncheon and discussion on Jan. 25, from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., at the Switzer Library located at 266 Roswell Street NE in Marietta.

This session will allow attendees to find out about the current services offered by the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Foundation. It will also give an overview of the plan for making a Dementia Friendly community and provide information about all local resources.

The event will also highlight new initiatives by the foundation that are directly impacting people. These programs are designed to meet the needs of both the caregiver and client in dealing with Alzheimer’s or Dementia care.

The kick-off will share the results from the sessions and offer opportunities to individuals, businesses and faith-based organisations to be involved in the formation a Dementia Friendly community.

Virtual veterans claims clinic

On Jan. 25, from 4-6 p.m., the Atlanta Regional Office will host an appointment-only Virtual Veterans Claims Clinic.

You can schedule a virtual appointment by calling 404-929-3100 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on January 24, through Jan. 24.

The Virtual Veterans Claims Clinic is staffed by Compensation regional office staff who will assist veterans with any questions they may have regarding their claims.

Volunteers trained in tap water training

Cobb County Water System is accepting applications to the 2023 Outreach Volunteer Program.

Training will typically be provided on Thursday evenings between February 2 and March 16, from 6:30-8 p.m.

The basic training sessions will include topics such as water quality and water pollution prevention. The training will be available online or in person for volunteers. Volunteers will be able to tour one of four water reclamation facilities in Cobb County Water System as part of the training.

The Outreach Volunteer Program offers water quality and prevention training to residents of local counties. They then help out at community events by providing simple, hands-on assistance. Outreach volunteers are able to make a difference in helping people understand the relationship between their daily actions and environmental health. Applications are accepted until January 16. Only one year is allowed for the program to admit and train applicants. Civil Air Patrol Squadron will hold an open house

The Cobb County Composite Squadron is a local unit of Civil Air Patrol and will host an open house at 1901 McCollum Parkway, Kennesaw, on January 19, at 6:30 pm.

Maj. Joshua Stultz (squadron commander) said that the community is welcome and encouraged to attend to learn more about CAP, as well as how you can join.

Visitors will be greeted by members of the squadron who will explain CAP’s missions to America. CAP was created on December 1, 1941. This open house is part the 82nd anniversary celebration. It aims to raise awareness about CAP’s contribution to the community.

GDOT weekend lane closures

This weekend, Cobb County will be closed by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).

— There will be lane closures on I-75 in both directions nightly Jan. 13-16 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for bridge replacement. The closures are from Moore’s Mill at mile marker 254 to Northside Drive (Railroad Bridge), mile marker 251, and from Moore’s Mill towards Mt Paran at mile marker 254 (mile marker 254-mile marker 255).

— There will be lane closures on I-75/SR 401 in both directions nightly from Jan. 13-14 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for construction activities. The closures are at I-75/SR 401 Southbound under Akers Mill Road; I-285/SR 407 Eastbound to I-75/SR 401 Southbound/Cumberland Boulevard Ramp; I-75/SR 401 Southbound under Akers Mill Road; and I-285/SR 407 Eastbound to I-75/SR 401 Southbound/Cumberland Boulevard Ramp.

— There will be lane closures on I-675 SR 400 in both directions nightly from Jan. 13-14 from 9:30 p.m. to 8 a.m. for bridge replacement in Cobb, Fulton and DeKalb counties. I-675 Southbound, Conley Road. I-675 Northbound, Conley Road. Ramp from I-85 to 400 Northbound (Exit 85).

The application period for the Marietta School Tuition Program is closed Jan. 31

Applications for the Marietta Schools Tuition Program have now opened and will close January 31st.

MCS Community Conversations continues to host town halls

Marietta City Schools will continue the Community Conversations series on January 17th, from noon to 12:30 pm. The focus of the town hall series will be on dyslexia resources that are available to students in the area.

The district created the town halls to showcase projects and initiatives that they are currently working on. Superintendent Grant Rivera will be presenting the major projects and initiatives of the district. Parents and guardians are welcome to ask questions, and to discuss the topics that have an impact on their student.

Dr. Jennifer Hernandez (Executive Director of the Office of Academic Achievement) will provide an overview of MCS support for dyslexic students, as well as the district’s participation to the Georgia Department of Education pilot dyslexia program. January 14th is Walmart Wellness Day

The first Walmart Wellness Day in 2023 will be January 14, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Customers can have their health checked at no cost by a pharmacist in any of the 67 states.
